Preparing to Re-Roof?

There are a few things we would suggest when considering a roofing project. The first thing is to evaluate how steep or complex your roof is. Shingling a simple gable roof on a single storey home is relatively straightforward. However, if the roof is steep, has multiple planes, needs valley work and complicated flashings; you may want to consider hiring a professional. As with any roof work, make sure you use the proper safety equipment to guard against falls.

Read more expert advice in our How To Hub on how to get started replacing your roof!

Then it’s time to thoroughly inspect the following before determining what equipment and supplies you require:

Now is the time to get into the attic and check sheathing for voids, separating plywood, and broken boards. While you’re up there, inspect the rafters for signs of damp or rot. All rotten or damaged boards under the old roof must be replaced. Look for rot along the edges of eaves. Make sure fascia boards are sound and solidly connected to the rafter tails.

Examine the flashing around chimneys, vent stacks, and skylights. It is always a good idea to check the condition of the metal valley flashing if applicable. Replace if damaged.

Don’t forget to do a thorough check on the condition of the old shingles. Bumps or dips in the old layer of shingles cannot be hidden by new roofing so now’s the time to fix them! If the old surface is not uniformly flat it should be removed before adding new shingles. Also check how many layers of shingles are already on the roof. You can see this along the rake (sloped) edge of the roof. Most codes allow a maximum of the original layer plus two reroofing layers. Check your local building code to be sure or hire a professional to do the job for you.

Fence Equipment

Fencing serves a number of purposes. It provides privacy and security, it helps to keep pets and children contained, and a solid fence can act as a sound buffer from road noise. But perhaps most importantly, the right fencing can also help to beautify your garden and backyard to add curb appeal to your home. Find the right type of fencing for your property and needs in our wide selection of fencing products.

Installing fencing is a doable DIY project that can add value to your property. Learn about popular fencing materials and styles to determine the best type for your outdoor living space and choose from the following types of fence for your needs:

Deck Materials

A deck doesn’t just increase the quality of your family’s outdoor life – it’s also an attractive addition to your home that can help add to its resale value in the future. But before you get ahead of yourself, there’s one question you need to ask, says John Esteves of Downtown Lumber Home Building Centre: “What are you going to be using your deck and backyard for? Is it going to be for entertaining? Or are you just hanging out?”

Adding a backyard deck is a great way to increase your living space and add value to your home. It creates an extra venue for outdoor dining, parties and socials, or simply relaxing with family and friends.

A deck requires a little more maintenance, but bonus points are awarded for nicer views, under-deck shading, and potentially direct access to your main floor and kitchen. It can also be raised to compensate for uneven ground (check your local building codes to see if you need a permit for construction). On the other hand, a patio has no weight restrictions so you can easily add a hot tub or outdoor fireplace. And if privacy is an issue, your trees and fencing can keep your ground-level deck a voyeur-free zone.

Popular Types of Outdoor Decking:

  • Pressure Treated Wood
  • Cedar Decking
  • Composite Decking
  • Deckorators
  • PVC Decking

Don’t forget about considering stairs, a railing, skirting, and lighting. All of which you can find at Home Hardware North Battleford.

Backyard Decisions: Do You Need A Deck?

6 Things to Consider Before You Build a Deck

Unframed house with insulation in walls and ceiling

Insulation is a vital material used in many home repair projects. An important part of any home, insulation prevents drafts and improves energy efficiency. Depending on the project, there are various types of insulation that are best suited to the job. Choosing the right insulation for your wall, roof or attic will ensure the best results. For quick repair projects, spray foam insulation is a good choice. It’s ideal for filling in gaps, cracks and hard-to-reach areas.

You can also insulate water heaters to prevent energy loss. Or wrap hot water pipes with tubular insulation to prevent them from freezing. Use insulation in heating and air conditioning vent ducts to improve efficiency and reduce noise. Proper insulation helps create a comfortable home environment. It will also save you money on energy costs.
